Introduction
The Shift Chemist is responsible for the supervision of the Laboratory staff to meet the set targets in a safe manner.
Job description
- Oversee the processing of daily and weekly sample volumes to align with business objectives and operational targets.
- Oversee weekly stock level checks and maintain adequate laboratory consumables to support uninterrupted operations and timely ordering.
- Verify sample analysis report prepared by Laboratory Technicians before daily distribution.
- Perform troubleshooting on laboratory instruments and take corrective action if necessary and refer major problems to C&I Mechanicians.
- Facilitate employee training on departmental policies, procedures, work instructions, and technical manuals to promote understanding and consistent application.
- Identify and report risks supporting proactive mitigation and continuous improvement in safety and operational performance.
- Plan workload with the commissioning of new projects to accommodate an increase in samples in the laboratory.
- Propose and drive laboratory improvement initiatives by suggesting best practices and actively participating in their implementation.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree (Chemistry) or related discipline.
- 5 years post qualification working experience in a mining/chemical/metallurgical laboratory environment of which 2 years should be in a supervisory position.
- Working experience on XRF, ICP-OES and UV techniques will be an added advantage.
- Valid Code B Driver’s License.
